This March we will be holding the 3rd annual DC Photo Shoot Off. It’s a 3-day mini photo workshop and competition. We pull a topic from a hat and everyone participating has 24-hours to photograph that subject. In 2006 the subject was “Unforgettable Faces.” Last year it was color. We leave the interpretation of the subject up to the participant. If you think that Unforgettable faces are the faces of clocks, then shoot it. If you think color should be only shots of racial diversity, that’s what you turn in. The only thing you need to keep in mind while shooting is that you will be judged on a 3 to 5 image package, how well they work together as a package or story, if that is what you shot.

The workshop is open to all military photographers and civilians who work for the government. The staff and mentors are made up of military and some of the best civilian photographers and editors in the D.C. area.

We know that military people aren't rich and that few commands would give orders or money for a weekend workshop so several of the staff open their homes for people who need a place to sleep. Just ask the coordinators if you need a place to crash. You will need to bring a sleeping bag if you do.

The workshop is hosted at the Naval Media Center on Anacostia Annex in Washington D.C. so you will need an ID to get on base. It's run by the D.C. Chapter of the National Association of Naval Photography we are a non-profit group putting the entry fees of the workshop toward food and tee-shirts. All staff and mentors are volunteers.
This site details the contest, entries from past years and has the entry form if you would like to participate. Enjoy the site and we hope to see you in March.
